The Pacific Premier Bank Cycling Cycling Team welcomed new riders Joseph Bacala and Thomas Wavrin as they joined the team this past weekend at the 18th edition of the San Dimas Stage Race.
Bacala, coming off an impressive 5th place at the stage 3 Time Trial in Chico just a week ago, quickly assumed a leadership role by taking Minnesota native Wavrin under his wing for the bulk of the 84 mile day 2 road race around Bonelli Park. After setting a team best time of 16:00 in the opening stage time trial, Wavrin had established himself as the team’s top General Classification rider sitting just 1:09 behind race leader Jordan Cheyne (KHS/Elevate). At the conclusion of the stage however, Wavrin would lose time after a split in the field left himself and several teammates out of contention for the day.
In the final stage, an 85 minute affair consisting of 6-turns in just 1.2 miles around old town San Dimas, a trio of Pacific Premier Riders that included Bacala hit the deck about half way through just as a group of four riders broke free from the peloton. Uninjured, all three were able to re-join the race per the free lap rule. After a few nervous laps the reluctance spawned by the mishap was left behind and the team reintegrated to begin work setting up for sprinter Enrique Aldapa. With the top three placings up the road, Aldapa would finish 7th in the field sprint landing 10th on the day.
Although the final result was less than the team had hoped for the improvement from just a year earlier, when only two riders had completed the event, was notable.
The boys are back in action April 7th at the San Luis Rey Road Race in Bonsall, CA.
